John 8:58
Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.
For today’s devotion I want to give you a list from the gospel of John. Eight times in this book Jesus says, “I Am”. Each time He said those two words, He was making a claim of deity to His audience. In John 8, He makes the strongest declaration of deity and it angered the Pharisees so much they wanted to stone Him. The title I AM goes back to Exodus 3:13-14 where God gave Moses His name as I AM THAT I AM. When Jesus referred to Himself as “I Am”, He was plainly telling them He was God. When we comprise a list of each of the “I Am’s”, we see exactly who He is and what He provides for us.
- I Am the Bread of Life – John 6:35
- I Am the Light of the World – John 8:12
- I Am the Door – John 10:9
- I Am the Good Shepherd – John 10:11
- I Am the Resurrection and the Life – John 11:25
- I Am the Way, the Truth, and the Life – John 14:6
- I Am the True Vine – John 15:1
- Before Abraham was, I Am – John 8:58
The Bible teaches us very clearly that Jesus is God. In the book of John, we see that definitively in the words of Jesus. We can rejoice in Him daily because He is our Bread when we are hungry. He is our Light in this dark world. He is the Door that we need to walk through for peace, joy, and victory. He is our Good Shepherd who gives His life for the sheep. He is our resurrection, not only in salvation, but ultimately when we die. Because He rose again from the dead, we know that we will rise again to live with Him for all eternity. He is our life. He is the way in which we should walk. He is the truth that we should live by. He is our life. He is the true vine that we have been grafted into. He is eternal, before Abraham, Moses, and even the foundations of the world. He knows all, sees all, and wants what is best for you and me. Today, consider all that He is, and rejoice in Him.
