Psalm 61:2
From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee,
when my heart is overwhelmed:
lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
David admits to the Lord that he was feeling overwhelmed. David wrote this in exile. Absalom had stolen his kingdom and removed him from his throne. His life as the king had drastically changed. This year has certainly been overwhelming. Our “normal life” has been stolen from us and it feels like we are in a form of isolated exile. Let’s do what David did. He cried out to God and asked Him, “Lead me to the rock that is higher than I”. Here are five characteristics of the rock.
- The Person.
The rock represents Jesus. In I Corinthians 10:4, we see that He is our Rock. - The Position.
The rock is higher than us. Jesus is always higher. He’s higher than the storms of life and the destructive waves that could overwhelm us. - The Power.
The rock is strong enough to withstand the force of life’s storms. - The Protection.
The rock is a firm foundation. In Psalms 40:1-2, we see that when we are on the rock, we have solid ground to stand on and our ways are established. - The Placement.
The rock is close enough to see. I’m glad Jesus is always close by and He’s visible to us if we will lift up our eyes to Him.
Take comfort in this truth. God hears and answers our prayers. When your heart is overwhelmed, do what David did. Cry out to him. He will lead you to the rock.
