Philippians 3:13-14

Have you set any goals for your life? When is the last time you thought about your goals. Have you set goals, but those goals were so high you became discouraged and gave up? If you have set goals, what aspect of your life do they involve? Are they physical, financial, spiritual? Do they have to do with your relationships such as your marriage, your children, your parents, your friends?

I believe goals are important. Trust me, I am no expert on the subject and I have fallen short far more than I have succeeded, but we all should set goals to try to reach. Every aspect of our lives would benefit greatly if we had goals.

Paul had a goal and he tells us about it and how he went about trying to achieve it in our Scripture today. In verse 14, the word “mark” means “goal”. The word “high” means “upward”. If you are a child of God, He has placed an upward calling on your life. He has better things in store for you than you can ever imagine. Through His power and strength, we can live above this world and all of its dismal decay. God wants you to be joyful in your life of victory. That only comes through surrender, submission, and obedience. Faith is also involved. We must trust Him and believe that He has far better plans for us than we could ever fulfill on our own.

Verse 13 is Paul’s formula for achieving his goal.
First of all, he was not complacent. He did not think that he had already apprehended. He still had something to accomplish for God.
Secondly, he kept the past in the past. “Forgetting those things which are behind” means that whatever has happened does not control our attitude and actions in the present. If it’s failure, accept God’s forgiveness and know that it’s gone. If it’s victory, know that it was God who gave it to you and He has many more victories in your future.
Thirdly, he never stopped looking ahead to what God had for him. “Reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark…” We all know that God used Paul in a mighty way to impact this world for the gospel. Paul never stopped pressing on, pressing forward, and reaching for the goal. What an inspiration! What a challenge!

I hope this has been a source of motivation for you today. Seek God’s will, surrender yourself to Him, set your goals for His glory, and go serve Him with joy and gladness!!
